Ren Monllor is a self taught fly-fisherman. He began fly fishing at the age of eighteen and learned from reading
the only publication he knew of at the time. As time went on, fly-fishing became his only desire and he would go out when
ever he could to the streams of north western New Jersey, Roscoe, New York and Central Pennsylvania. He actually worked out
a deal with his employer to let him start his day very early in the morning, so as to be able to leave work at 1:00 p.m. and fly fish
until the sun set.
At the age of twenty, while at a shop in Roscoe, he came across a rod like he’d never seen before. It was a Garrison
212e made of a wooden like material and it had a wonderful feel to it. He asked if he could pick up the rod and take it outside and
the proprietor said yes. Completely taken by the rods beautiful features it instantly became an extension of his arm, his hand, his
soul: and the love story began. He knew that he needed to partner with such a rod.
Not being able to afford such a magnificent fishing tool, he thought that he would try to make one. Lucky for him, Garrison’s book had just come into print and he purchased the
book, read it from cover to cover, and as time would have it, life took over. He married, had children and fished less and less. He
never stopped thinking of someday making and fishing a beautiful, hand split, cane rod.
After remarrying and having two
more beautiful children, Gabrielle and Ansel, he became disabled, and a single dad . He thought to himself…”I have a responsibility
to my children. I need to be doing what I love, the money will follow.”, and with the help of circumstance, he took whatever he could
sell or swap and made his first planning forms, purchased materials and tools and began making bamboo rods.
After almost two years he was introduced to and offered, a federally funded program, to afford him the opportunity to go into business for himself.
